Jericoacoara

On the 15th of March, 1987, the well-known American newspaper, The Washington Post, published a list of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. The evaluation of this selection included mainly the beauty and exotic aspects of the locality. To the general surprise of the Brazilians, on the top of the list was an unknown beach on the eastern coast of Ceara and with a really strange name: Jericoacoara. From then on, American and European adventurers followed by Brazilians landed on that remote and paradise of a beach. From then on to now the flow of tourists has increased, transforming Jeri , as it is locally known, into a real legend of a place.

Surrounded by dunes and coconut palms it is protected by a rocky elevation called the "serrote", the saw and Jeri generates fascinating images. Sunset on the great dune or at the Malhada Beach is an example of this. The fortunate spectator can contemplate the fiery sphere of the sun disappearing into the calm blue sea at that point of the Atlantic ocean in a spectacle of light and color. Other examples are the natural formations sculpted by nature and we can note the most famous postcard scene of Jeri, the Pedra Furada (The Holed Rock) a great rock on the seaside with a hole in its center . There are as well the giant dunes with round shapes and steep sides. These dunes are very white and turn yellow in the evening.

A place which is particularly fascinating to the visitor is the Paraiso Lagoon (The Paradise Lagoon). It is one of the most beautiful sights in Brazil, A great expanse of crystal clear water, the tone of color varying from emerald green to sky-blue. Pure pleasure!
